What's the difference between Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)?
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a technology that allows energy from an electric car battery to be fed back into the National Grid. V2G charging is the two-way flow of energy from the grid to a Vehicle to Grid charger in an electric car, and back to the grid. V2G cars provide their drivers with the choice to charge their electric car battery from the grid or sell energy from their battery back to the grid. As such, Vehicle to Grid technology enables us to control electric car charging based on the demand for EV charging in any given place.
V2G technology could redefine how we can use renewable energy by providing a form of 'storage' for renewable energy that isn't constantly available, for example solar or wind power. Producing this kind of renewable electricity when it is available and using a V2G car battery to store it allows us to make much more efficient and constant use of green energy.
Vehicle to Grid demonstrates how the flow and storing of energy between two vessels can happen on a much larger scale, rather than between an EV battery and chargeable domestic appliances, as with Vehicle to Load.
