What is EV Range Anxiety
Range Anxiety: What is it and Why You Don’t Need to Worry
Over the past couple of years, we’ve all witnessed how the emergence and growing popularity of electric cars
has transformed the landscape of the automotive industry. While the acceleration of the EV industry is, without a doubt, a positive movement, introducing a new way of driving may still come with a few uncertainties.
As a result, drivers looking to make the change to electric may have concern about the range EVs can travel before needing to refuel. This has been labelled as ‘range anxiety’.
At Kia, we understand the worries that come with a new driving experience. However, nowadays it’s never been easier to go emission-free. Let’s tackle exactly what EV range anxiety is and find out more about why it’s no longer something for prospective EV owners to worry about.
What is EV range anxiety?
Range anxiety refers to the concern that an electric car’s range is not long enough to reach the destination. In the past, electric car range anxiety has often been considered as one of the major barriers facing drivers who want to switch to an electric car.
This was prevalent a few years ago when EVs were just emerging, but it no longer has such an impact.
Do we still need to have range anxiety?
Nowadays, it’s fair to say that EV range anxiety is generally unwarranted. Over the past couple of years, there have been huge advancements in EV battery technology.
This means that car manufacturers are able to build electric cars
with much longer electric-only ranges.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), electric cars in the UK have an average range of 236 miles. Therefore, most EVs can easily meet everyday driving needs, and many are also capable of completing longer distance journeys on just one charge.
Another progression that has helped to combat electric car range anxiety is the increasing number and availability of public charging stations.
According to ZapMap, in 2019 there were only 16,965 public charging stations across the UK. As of the end of November 2023, that number has increased to over 50,000, demonstrating the rapidly expanding infrastructure for EV charging.

The EV driving range for EV6 & EV9 was determined according to the standardised EU measurement procedure (WLTP). The individual driving style and other factors, such as speed, outside temperature, topography and the use of electricity-consuming devices/units, have an influence on the real-life range and can possibly reduce it.
