Electric Car Battery Cover & EV Warranty Protection
Electric car battery cover: Why you need an EV warranty
An EV battery
is often recognised as the defining component of an electric car.
Responsible for supplying the motor with energy, electric car batteries are integral to the operational running of electric vehicles.
EV batteries are complex to produce and expensive to repair or replace, so having them covered under an electric car warranty is a must for EV drivers. At Kia, we aim to maximise the financial benefits of EV driving by ensuring your battery is fully covered for up to 8 years
Let’s delve into why having an electric car battery warranty is so important and how it can help you get the most out of your EV.
How long do electric car batteries last?
EV batteries are manufactured to outlast the cars they power, and most electric car batteries generally have a lifespan of upwards of 10 years (or 100,000 miles). A hybrid car
battery lifespan tends to be about the same.
Electric car batteries are one of the key components, alongside the electric motor, which enable emission-free driving for electric cars.
The job of an EV battery
is to store energy and deliver it to the electric motor to power the vehicle in the absence of a combustion engine.
EV batteries operate by a range – a distance the car can travel before the battery runs out of charge. When (or, ideally, before) this happens, they require recharging. Pure EVs
and PHEVs
use plug-in charging, whereas hybrid cars
can charge themselves either as you drive using the combustion engine or through regenerative braking.
If the battery isn’t functioning at its full capacity, its range will start to decrease, requiring the driver to recharge it more frequently. Without a car warranty,
EV batteries are very expensive to repair or replace, so having battery coverage for long enough to cover most of a battery’s lifespan is imperative.

Battery warranty on electric cars
All EV manufacturers offer warranties on their electric car batteries. However, EV battery warranty coverage can differ considerably.
Some manufacturers offer warranties that only cover your battery in the event of complete battery failure. This means that your fees are only covered if the battery is completely broken. If the battery is either simply operating at a low capacity or only slightly compromised, you will still be liable to pay for repairs or replacements.
Kia, offer a battery warranty that operates on a specified performance threshold. If the car battery capacity or performance drops below this threshold, the warranty will cover the necessary repairs or replacements.
For Kia’s standard 8-year battery warranty,
the threshold is 70%. Therefore, Kia will cover any repairs or replacements if your electric car battery drops below 70% capacity within 8 years from the date of purchase. Our car warranty is also transferrable, so you can benefit from a higher resale value when it comes to selling your Kia.
The best EV warranty packages are those that include comprehensive coverage of your EV battery,
rather than just in the instance of complete failure. Such as the electric battery cover provided by Kia. Securing this kind of EV warranty will ensure that you don’t have to live with suboptimal performance and efficiency caused by a largely faulty battery – or fund the repairs for it out of your own pocket.
